The crankshaft pulley powers all of the components connected to the crankshaft. While the crankshaft will drive the car wheels, the pulley transmits power to other parts, such as the alternator and power steering pump. The crankshaft pulley includes an internal dampener, responsible for decreasing vibrations running along the pulley belts. If left unchecked, these vibrations can cause damage to the systems that are connected. While a torn or defective crankshaft pulley belt is simple to replace, a broken dampener requires a crankshaft pulley replacement.
So, what causes a crankshaft pulley to go bad? Even though the part is designed to last the lifetime of your engine, it can fail easily. Most models have a rubber isolation ring that breaks down when exposed to high temperatures, which happens naturally because of the engine.
Plus, if there is a coolant or oil leak that gets on the pulley, it can contaminate it and speed up deterioration. The crankshaft pulley, otherwise known as a harmonic balancer, is found on the end of the crankshaft. While the crankshaft is responsible for converting straight or linear movement to the pistons, the crankshaft pulley connects to several other components through the use of accessory belts.
If you purchase an aftermarket crankshaft pulley, you could save yourself a little money. Additionally, luxury cars might cost slightly more overall.

Hi I have a 02 buick rendezvous cxl 3. I ordered a harmonic balancer online and it will be here on the 2nd so not to much longer but when he replaces that will everything be fine? I never had any major issues with it this is the first time the belt broke and I never kept trying to drive it since I realized it was still messed up after putting the new belt on so I'm hoping changing the harmonic balancer will fix the issue because we dont have alot of money to keep putting parts on it.
Please let me know your thoughts this is are only vehicle that gets us out of town for are kids doctors appointments and we really need this vehicle to last until tax time.
Thank you for reading this please let me know your thoughts. Recently, I took it to have a cpl new tires put on, have them rotated, balanced, get an oil change, and have my serpentine belt replaced. Nearly the exact same thing happened to us as what played out on your end. The belt came off, car overheated, steering wheel locked.. We called the mechanic who came out to put the belt back on, then followed us back to the shop. To replace the timing belt on most vehicles the damper has to come off.
The most important thing to remember is; never put pressure on the outer ring with a hammer. So, do not use a hammer to hit the damper. Because, this could damage the internal components. Instead, always use the correct tools to install a damper. As a result, not using the correct tools can; damage the damper and the crankshaft.
The most common installation error is using the center bolt to; pull the damper on the nose of the crank. A belt that is too tight can cause; excessive stress on the accessory belt drive items.
As a result, the harmonic damper can fail from the extra tension. You may also see this as a flutter in the tensioner arm. So, a simple way to think of the harmonic balancer is like a massive stress reliever. Because, it absorbs the violent torsion of the modern-day engine. Timing belt replacement is most often, between every 75, and , miles. Timing Belts-Chains Or Gears, all perform the same function. Their job is to synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft.
Timing belts have replaced timing chains, in most of the vehicles on the road today. Most of the images displayed are of unknown origin. We do not intend to infringe any legitimate intellectual right, artistic rights or copyright.
Most often connected to a crankshaft pulley. Harmonic balancers have other names as well. Such as vibration damper, crankshaft pulley damper, crankshaft balancer, and crankshaft harmonizer.
